Friday Art Feature – Kristin Palmer

Happy first Friday of Summer!
This week’s Featured Artist is

Kristin Palmer

Artist Kristin Palmer
You are a self taught artist. What motivated you to begin painting and how did you teach yourself?
I’ve been drawing and painting ever since I could hold a pencil, so art comes naturally to me. I knew ever since I was a kid that I would be an artist. The saying “Practice makes perfect” comes to mind about how I taught myself. Practice, Practice Practice 🙂

What medium(s) do you use and have you ever tried others, but not stuck with them?
I’m pretty much addicted to watercolor. A majority of my paintings are semi-mixed media. The bulk of one of my artworks will be watercolor with just hints of acrylic, colored pencil and gouache. Sometimes I will also throw in some pastel or ink. I’m actually currently working on a skull series that is entirely acrylics on canvas.

Your website is named Mystic Fae Fantasy Art. Who is the mystic fae?
Mystic Fae Fantasy Art came about when I was trying to pick a “Name” for my art. I knew I didn’t want to do the conventional “The Fantasy Art of Kristin Palmer” thing so it’s not really anything or anyone in particular. I sat for I think it was like three days, coming up with names and researching them to see if they were available. Then finally I was laying in bed one night and “Mystic Fae” popped into my head and I was like “YESSSSSSSSS THATS IT” *giggles*

In many of your paintings, the central figure has a strong connection with nature and animals, which seems to tell a story. Do you get a story in your head and then paint it, or does the story emerge as you paint?
The story definitely comes about when I’m drawing/painting a piece, most of the time I’m not even aware that a story is forming. My fans will comment with something like “I love the story it tells” and I’m like “What?” and I look at it again and I think “OHHHHHHHHH ok, I can see it now” *giggles* I love it when my works speaks to others. On rare occassions I will have a story planned out for my characters though.

Who are your favorite artists and why?
When I was younger, I was highly influenced by Amy Brown, Jessica Galbreth, Selena Fenech and Brian Froud so with being influenced by them as a teen they became some of my favorites…Now with being on facebook and friends with so many TALENTED artists my favorites list has become sorta long. Heidi M. Drake is one on the list who I owe for pushing me into my art career and taking me under her wing.

What types of music do you enjoy? Does it ever inspire you to paint?
I’m a full on rocker and metal chick. I LOVE hard rock and heavy metal. The music itself doesn’t inspire me really but the song titles do. I have a few pieces that are named after songs.

What do you enjoy doing when you are not painting?
When I’m not painting I’m usually crafting. I sew, make jewelry, sculpt, knit and crochet ect. I’m also a concert fiend. I would go insane without going to a concert every couple of months 😉
