Meet The Artist – Trish Schaffer aka Lady Dragus

Many years ago, when I first stumbled around online, I fell in love with the art world.  I was awestruck by so many amazing artists.  The internet for me was like a huge art gallery.

It wasn’t long before I discovered the world of signature tags and began to create them myself.  From there I created my own ‘tagging group’ which was one of the first copyright compliant groups out there.  I strongly believed that the artists who originally created the art and gave permission for it to be used in our digital mixed media creations, should be given credit and thanked at every turn.  Sadly, back then, this wasn’t the norm.  I was a pioneer at the time.  This was before ‘tube stores and licensing existed’.

It was this overloading of my artistic senses that made me want to become an artist myself and license my art to be used in signature tagging.  It is also one of the reasons I continue to promote artists and introduce artists to you here on my blog.

It also has created in me a soft spot for the signature tagging community, which is filled with so many talented artists, who make their digital mixed media creations every day in the form of signature tags.

Today, I’d like to introduce you to one of these artists, the very talented

Trish Shaffer aka Lady Dragus

Who is, “Trish Schaffer “Lady Dragus””?  Tell us a little about yourself.

I am a stay at home mom. I’m disabled and I love to play with kits and tubes to make tags.

Your creations are done digitally.. Please explain your craft and art to those who have never heard about ‘psping’ and signature tags.

I take a licensed copy of art ( that I buy with money or the tube is gifted to me) and I use it to make a tag.

You use many different artists’ works in your creations. The art is ‘tubed’. Would you please explain what this means, for those who don’t know.

The Tube Image comes from a picture an artist drew/painted online, or offline.  If he/she sells in a Licensing store, I then can make a tag with it and a scrap kit to make the tag.

How are artists’ copyrights respected and protected?

I always use a copyrighted image, and I give credit to the artist whom I use, and link to there website/store/gallery how ever there Terms of Usage allow use to use there tag’s. I never use an artist’s that does not allowing cropping the image out of his/her artwork.

You are a popular tutorial writer.  Where do you get the ideas for your signature tags and
tutorials?

I can look at a kit and say Hey I can tutorialize that, and I just make the tag, it’s hard to explain how it is done, but if I have a tube and a kit that match each other, the tag just flow’s and the steps in which I can use them both, make the tutorial easy to do.. I enjoy sharing how I do my tags, but I also enjoy seeing others do my tutorial, that to me is the best form of a compliment if someone read’s my tut, and make a tag, there own out of it, show’s that I do touch others when I write a tutorial.

You also create design elements and scrap kits. What is involved in this and, again, where do you get the inspiration for them?  Could readers also use your scrap kits in digital scrapbooking?

I use other’s templates and scripts to make my kits sometimes it’s just an object with many layers that you can colorize for your own kit, or that is grayscaled to colorize on your own, each of these require credit so other “kit makers and taggers” know who’s CU items are in a kit.

Who is/are your favorite artist(s)?  What speaks to you about them?

Oh man to have to pick just one, as a favorite, that is hard I love so many of them, for so many different reasons.

My number one is Michael Turner, for his love of comics and his characters in his books. They were wickedly good books and sadly we lost him in June of 2008, he was an inspiration for me to get into graphics, I may not draw my kit and or tubes, but his work is to me special.

My 2nd one, a tube artist, is Angelica Sellers she does a lot of Commercial usage of her creations. They are so life like, and I think if you could see them you could feel the fur or wing’s if you touched the images.

What other creative activities do you do on a regular basis?

I like to read and write poetry.

“Paint” a picture of yourself for us; using 10 colorful words to describe you, the total picture.

Steady, quiet, book nerd, spacey, mother, daughter, loyal, honest, trustworthy, ( I can’t think of anymore)

Thank you so much Trish, for this wonderful look into your creative process, your art and you.
